Janice and I are the official real estate sponsors and listing agents for the 2009 Clark County Parade of Home in Camellia. As such we have been manning an onsite sales booth for the past 16 days. Being onsite each day has given us a great opportunity to meet with guests and to network with the other vendors and builders. Another benefit has been the media opportunities that have been made available to us from time to time. Today, I had the opportunity to be interviewed on KXL Radio as a representative for the Parade of Homes. My performance, while amusing, was less than stellar! Here is a brief recap exactly how it happened.

The host introduced me.

I thanked him for allowing me to be on his show.

A fly landed on my face. I was shoo-ing it away as he asked me a question about the parade.

I missed half the question but did my best to answer as the fly kept buzzing around my nose and eyes.

The host pointed to a home behind him and asked me to tell him about it.

The home that he picked wasn't one of the ones in the parade! I tried to respond using the least amount of "UH's" and "Um's" while continuing to fight off the very persistant fly. I was tongue tied and sounding like an idiot while waving my hands around. Good thing we weren't on TV. The fly flew away.

The host was now trying to hold back his laughter as he wrapped up the segment. As he was setting me up for a parting shot, a bee flies over and lands in my hair!

Needless to say, it wasn't my finest public speaking appearance. I guess there is always next year!

2009 Clark County Parade of Homes - Global Technology

We are fast approaching to the final weekend for the 2009 Clark County Parade of Homes, so if you plan on visiting, you had better be quick! The last day is this Sunday August 30th.

This month our 5 min spiel speaker will be Kelley Beamer of Friends of the Columbia Gorge. The basic message will be about her organization and their efforts to protect the scenic, natural, cultural and recreational resources in the Gorge.  Friends leads over 75 public hikes and stewardship events in the Gorge each year and works to ensure the Gorge remains a natural treasure for future generations to enjoy. She'll talk about our upcoming hiking season and what folks can do to get involved.

Home Green Home- Anyone interested in building, remodeling and managing greener homes and buildings of all types will want to participate in Home Green Home, the second Washington State Recycles Every Day event of 2009. Scheduled for September 28 in Vancouver, Washington, the day starts with optional tours and includes presentations on recycling paint, hardwood floors made from waste, drywall recycling and environmentally appropriate cleaning products. Talks and guided tours will focus on reusing building materials and on electronics recycling. Lunch and a Q&A session with the speakers are included in the event.

The City of Vancouver and Clark County have made special arrangements with the Washington State Recycling Association to offer our local residents and businesses the opportunity to attend this first local Washington Recycles Every Day (WRED) event at the Member rate rather than the Non-Member rate (a savings of $15).  To obtain this local discount for non-members you must live or work in Clark County/Vancouver and you must mention, at the time of registration, that you heard about it through this e-mail.  Limited discount tickets are available, so please register soon.

Block Foam Recycling:
Saturday, September 5th from 9am - 1pm recycle your block foam.  Bring it down to the Clark College Yellow 1 Parking Lot,  Fort Vancouver Way.  Recycle clean, dry block foam at this event.  No packing peanuts of any kind or polyurethane foam will be accepted.  For more information, call 360-397-6118 ext 4352.

Learn to Garden in Clark County

 As most of you already know, I have previously written about how raised vegetable gardens seem to be taking the housing market by storm. (Are Vegetable Gardens The New Granite Counter Tops?! A "Must Have?", What Does a $2,000,000 Vegetable Garden Look Like? - 2009 Clark County Parade of Homes ) What you may not know is that Clark County residents now have two new options for gardening education.

The Clark County Homegrown Gardens program is looking for folks who are interested in learning how to grow their own vegetable garden. Selected participants will be given access to a raised bed with soil, seeds, plants, and basic gardening tools. They will also receive a copy of the All New Square Foot Gardening book to use as a guide and they will be provided with a mentor for encouragement. No previous gardening experience is necessary.

For Clark County residents who are experienced gardeners and looking to take there knowledge up to the next level, Washington State University is starting their Master Gardener classroom training classroom this fall. The program starts on September 16 and runs for 11 weeks.The training covers all phases of horticulture as related to the management of landscapes and gardens in a science-based sustainable manner. Trainees mus apply for the program and must complete a specific number volunteer hours after completing the training.
