What Do Your Underwear Say About The Market?
This morning I was reading an article that Michael Brush wrote for MSN Money called How your undies track the recession.
He sites that "Greenspan reasons that because hardly anyone actually sees a guy's undies, they're the first thing men stop buying when the economy tightens."
He also quotes Marshal Cohen, the chief industry analyst with NPD Group, which tracks consumer behavior, as saying, "By extension, pent-up demand means underwear sales should be among the early risers when growth returns and consumers feel confident enough to shrug off "frugal fatigue."
In an effort to predict the future of our real estate economy, let's try our own little experiment here on Active Rain.
1. What kind of undies do you wear?
2. What condition are they in?
3. Are you planning to buy new undies any time soon?
4. What is your opinion of the real estate market in your area?

Too cute....I just bought some new undies actually. Thanks for not requiring a picture. I guess that would be something consumers stopped splurging on....they will still make sure they have their Starbucks (no one will be checking the undies, heck, some of us probably don't wear them at all. Look at all the money they are saving...hhmmm.
Great post. LOL. I just bought some and the market in Tyler is great. Thanks for the laugh.
LOL! Well, our market here in Corvallis seems to be picking up a bit, but as for new undies?? I'm holding off :~) Thanks for the post...that's great!
There are probably some folks in my area going 'commando' but after 29 years in this biz I'm more concerned about what my mother told me about having clean underwear on in case I end up in a car accident! Thanks for the laugh AND the request to avoid including pictures!
LOL. This should be interesting.
OK... I wear one "cut/type" of undies which I'm not going to describe =/ But I buy many different brands and variations. Whenever I see something I like, I buy more, and it's not very often that I actually go shopping specifically for them, although I have gone on undie shopping sprees a few times. HAHA! And condition is always good or they hit the trash... I think that's all I'll share. LOL
So how's my local real estate market going to do? Are you the new undie/market guru? =S
Oh and BTW, Mr. Greenspan's theory doesn't hold water because wives will always throw away their husband's old, ratty underwear. At least I do! I even rip it apart before I throw it away, just in case he decides he still wants them. ROFL!!! Yes, it's happened.
Mark - at the risk of providing TMI:
1) boxer briefs
2) good condition (at least todays ;^), but then I am frugal and, regardless of economy, wear them until they no longer keep things in place
3) no, I have a drawer full of drawers
4) still slow, and maybe slowing.
Now, as far as that double entendre "underwear sales should be among the early risers when growth returns"
I try to beat the system. I wear underarmour. They last forever and super comfortable. Granted at $20/pair they should
Tina - Starbucks or Undies? Hmmmm...Sacrifices will have to be made!
Terry - Interesting thought. Maybe we can affect the market by splurging on a new pair of boxers!
Kelli - You just announced to the entire internet that you are going to be wearing old undies!
SarahGray - Good for you! Mother always knows best.
Lisa - My wife told me that they must have been "lost in the dryer!" Now I know the truth.
Mike - Maybe we can help the market move along by buying new undies! Wait, first we should buy shares of Fruit of the Loom. Then new underwear!
Larry - Thank you for sharing. LOL!
Tighty whites aside, I typically go commando... as you know from our genuine expereience together;)
And to answer the questions:
1) Boxers, gently stained.
2) They are around my knees on most nights.
3) Nope.
4) Could be better, could be worse. The Market is what we make it.
