Tip #96 - Are You Committed?

The days of being a part time real estate agent and making boat loads of money are long gone. You can no longer make a good living by selling an occasional home to a friend or family member. The agents who are thriving in today's market are committed. The new agents getting into the business will have to be even more committed to succeed.

There are two people in my coaching program who started their careers off right. Each of them have only had their licenses for a few weeks and they have both already been out on several listing appointments. They have dedicated themselves to their new careers as realtors.

One has actually "burned the ships" Cortez style and quit her regular job in order to commit to what she needs to do as a realtor. She didn't want to be distracted by an escape route. She doesn't have a rich husband or anyone to pay the bills. She told me that she works better under pressure. That is commitment!

What have they been doing to get these appointments? They have been treating their new career like a regular job. They show up at the office each day and they spend several hours making calls to people who they don't know to talk to them about selling their homes. That takes commitment!

One focuses on expired listings and the other works on FSBO's. The one who works with FSBO's took her first listing last week. How many of you had a listing that wasn't from a relative in the first 3 weeks of having your license?

Ask yourself this, Are you committed to doing what it takes to be successful? Are you willing to burn your ships and do what ever it takes to succeed? If your answer is anything other than an resounding YES, then you might want to consider another career.

So committed to real estate, that I left another profitable business I own suffer. And now I wish I'd of given time to that business when I was giving it all to real estate. I'd be in better shape, have a profitable real estate business, AND my other business still thriving.

One thing I have learned through this real estate mess, is that in the future, I will have multiple stream of income so as to not be backed in the corner, scraping for every deal.

That realization has led me to a new opportunity that fits perfectly with my real estate business, AND offers me long term income potential.

Now, life is going to be awesome!

At first when I read the title, I thought you were talking about me getting a new little white jacket, but I've avoided that nicely! It is very hard to commit ones self and I remember my first year, I was at the office every morning at 6am, I was always the one to unlock the door. I would make my list of who I was going to call, what I was going to say and at 8am, I made at least 20 calls. It was either 20 calls or 11am, what ever came last. If I got done with 20 calls at 9:30, I would continue making calls until 11:30. If I only had 15 calls done at 11:30 I would keep making calls until I reached those 20 calls. I'm glad I did, or I don't think I would have learned what I did. (THIS BUSINESS IS TOUGH, BUT WORTH IT)

Mark - sometimes that is the problem ... the regular job paid them even when the effort was marginal .... The context however, is more important ... the success you achieve is directly related to the effort you invest ...

Thanks for the tip ....

Mark---When I was new in the business,  I HAD to make it work.  I had no choice.  And now I find that the hungriest agents on my team are the hardest workers and the most likely to succeed.

Mark,

I have to work 100% to get 100% and can never do this job part time.

Mark, I have heard many times that this sort of commitment really works.  It would be very hard for someone to do this business well part time.

You mean just showing up at the office for three hours a day, checking e-mail, chortling over said e-mail, and checking msnbc doesn't count?!  You have to make phone calls, too?.... Well that explains alot!
